Spencer

My brain, filled with thoughts of her image for the past twenty-four hours, had not done her justice. After I kissed her, I handed her the sunflowers and motioned her to head-on into the house while I followed. Earlier today, she had texted and said we hadn’t mentioned anything about dinner. I didn’t tell her that I was planning on eating her—well, I almost told her, and then I erased it—and I typed it again, and erased it again.

I wondered what she had thought after watching the dancing ellipses on her screen, indicating I was typing, for several minutes, before I finally responded with the shorter, How about Chinese takeout?

Since I was forty-five minutes early, dinner had not yet arrived when I rang her doorbell. And, frankly, the sight of her made me more interested in my initial plans of just having her for dinner. But if she needed to ease into this, I was going to give her that. I had given up trying to convince myself this was just about sex. I had never felt so . . . giddy. As girly as the word sounded, that was what was causing my stomach to flutter, above and beyond the weight of desire in my groin.

Making small talk until dinner arrived was much easier than I thought it would be as I caressed every inch of her with my eyes, wanting desperately to grab her up and spread her on the floor before me so I could feast on her. We had an easy rapport, more proof this woman was going to be mine.

And, of course, there was Gabby who needed attention and kept trying to steal the spotlight. At one point, when Janine had stepped out to get us two more beers, I leaned in and confided with Gabby, "You are worthy of all my attention, but I ain't gonna lie. I can't keep my mind off your mom right now. I promise you I'm going to turn my attention to you after I've devoured your mom. And don't worry. I think I’m going to be around a lot after tonight.”

Gabby tilted her head from side to side as I whispered to her and then put her paw on my knee.

“It’s a deal,” I said after shaking her paw.

“What’s a deal?” came Janine’s voice from the doorway.

I smiled. "That's between Gabby and me here."

Janine narrowed her eyes suspiciously. The doorbell rang, and our Chinese dinner interrupted any further prying.

Half an hour later, I had gotten my fireplace lighter and some firestarter, plus a sweet surprise, from my truck and joined Janine in her backyard. She had pulled up two patio chairs—not close enough for my liking, so I remedied that—to sit in front of a beautifully painted clay firepit that had not been there the day before. The sun was starting to set, but I wanted to wait until it was a little darker to get the bonfire started.

Janine suggested we take Gabby around the block to walk off our dinner.
